10 Completely Useless Human Body Parts

Your body is the structural framework completely unique to you as a human being. It’s composed of different bones, muscles, and systems which operate your body.

Every single cell in your body has a vital part to play. At least the science used o think so. The new theory says there are many structures in your body that have no function what so ever.

These are the organs that played major roles for our ancestors, but their function has been reduced to nothing. These organs are also called vestigial organs.

Plica Semilunaris

Plica semilunaris is a fold of the conjunctiva near the nose that is transparent and acts as a third eyelid in animals, but in the human body, it performs no function. It is actually the remnant of the nictitating membrane. Although we cannot move it, it does help in eye movement and drainage.

Darwin’s Point

It is a small bump like structure which is found on the exterior ear. It was named after Darwin because he was the first one who claimed this structure to be an evidence in his evolution theory. Darwin’s theory suggested that this structure proves a common ancestry between monkeys and humans.

Vomeronasal Organ

It is a sensory organ of the olfactory system. It is found in the vomer bone in the base of the nasal system. A lot of research was done to prove that this organ is used to smell pheromones, but there is no evidence for such a connection. Research shows that the pheromones detection is actually done by the olfactory epithelium.

organs with no function 3

Wisdom Teeth

Also called the third molar. 35% of the population does not have wisdom teeth. They are the last teeth to grow and because they don’t have much space to erupt, they come in crooked. This can cause swelling and lead to physical pain, hence it becomes necessary to remove them.

Auricular Muscles

Auricle, also called pinna, is found in the external ear. Auricular muscles are found in both animals and human. In animals, they perform the function of moving the ear in the direction of the sound. In humans, its function is reduced to involuntary movements of the ear caused by the contraction of auricular muscles.

Coccyx

Coccyx, also called tailbone, is found at the bottom of the spine. It is formed by the fusion of 3-5 vertebrae. It is a vestigial organ which was functional in our primate ancestors as they had tails. Although it performs no function in the human body, more than 50 cases of newborns being born with tails to have been reported.

Arrector Pili Muscle

These are smooth muscles that connect the hair follicles to the skin tissue. When the body becomes chilled, these muscles contract, causing the hairs to stand up. This effect is more commonly called “Goosebumps”. In animals, it is used to scare off predators and provide warmth.

Appendix

It is a pouch-shaped structure which is attached to the large intestine. In animals, it is used to digest cellulose, but in humans, it performs no function.

Many years ago, humans had more use for it as they ate more vegetation during old age period.

When the appendix becomes inflamed, due to the accidental entry of acidic material, it causes appendicitis. It is surgically removed before causing further damage.

Palmaris Longus Muscle

This muscle is located on our wrists. It is present in 85% of the population, but some people don’t have them entirely or they just have them in one arm only.

organs with no function 9

This muscle has no function in the human body. It is believed to give you more strength to grip, but such evidence has not been found.

Want to find out if you have them or not? Try flexing your wrists or touch your thumb to your pinky finger and raise your hand.

Male Nipples

Male and female, both are born with nipples. But due to the function of certain hormones, breasts are enlarged in women and remain rudimentary in men.

Nipples contain thousands of neurons and are sensitive to touch in both sexes. In man, they are only used in sexual stimulation.
