Almost every wearer of contact lenses will know what must be done while wearing them. You put them on in the morning and take them off at night.
It’s a piece of cake really or is it? Apparently, for some, that isn’t so where doctors have found one of the weirdest cases concerning contact lenses.
Believe it or not, doctors removed 27 contact lenses from a woman’s eye. Yes, you heard that right! In one of the most bizarre cases reported in the British medical journal, doctors revealed how they removed the excruciating 27 lenses from the eyes of a 67-year-old woman admitted to Solihull Hospital England.
The problem concerning contact lenses wasn’t exactly the issue for which she was admitted to hospital. She was due for cataract surgery but while examining her eyes a surgeon found a bluish mass inside one of them.
The blue mass stuck in her eye shocked doctors when they found out what it was
The blue mass which a surgeon discovered in the old woman turned out to be 17 contact lenses stuck together. Doctors too were shocked but once they recovered, they again found 10 additional lenses in the same eye.
The 67-year-old woman in question was meant to be undergoing surgery to treat cataracts, but during the examination of one her eyes, a trainee surgeon found a “bluish mass” in the eye, which they later found to be 17 contact lenses all stuck together.
After the initial shock, the doctors then found a further 10 individual contact lenses all within the same eye.
The old woman had no complaints attributing the soreness to old age
According to specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria, “None of us have ever seen this before, “It was such a large mass.
All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”
Although it might have been painful and sore for the elderly woman, one can’t help being amused at the reason she gave doctors. She thought her soreness was due to her old age and dry eye.
There must have been laughter and huge sighs of relief all around when the lenses were taken out. The odd thing was that apart from soreness she never really reported any other problems in her eye except for the cataract surgery advised because of poor vision.
A lesson never to skip an ophthalmologist appointment especially in old age
The woman wore contact lenses for 35 years and skipped her regular ophthalmologist appointments. It was her poor vision and deep-set eyes that helped her overcome any further problems from the lenses stuck in her eye.
As for her cataract surgery, that has been put on hold as the conjunctiva could contain a lot of bacteria which could invite a high risk of infection from surgery. The case was reported when doctors removed 27 contact lenses from the aged woman’s eye as it was a rare one.
Till now doctors have assumed that it was virtually impossible for anyone to live with so many lenses in one eye and not show any symptoms of it. The report is also a warning to people to have a regular ophthalmologist check up since contact lenses are so easily available online.
